Summer in the City: Outdoor Movie Night

July 28, 2015
A massive inflatable screen + a field in the heart of London + 10 Things I Hate About You + 400 people + food + drink + blankets = one damn good summer's night.

I'm a bit of a complete and utter Pinterest fanatic and, during the recent stint of hot weather we had, I very optimistically decided to create an all-things-summery Pinterest board; it's basically a board gradually being made up of pretty pictures of beaches, shadows, ice-cream, picnics, outfits and, most importantly, amazing things to do that are made even more amazing by the presence of sun/heat. So I made it my kind of summer bucket-list board and aim to recreate as many of the experiences in the pictures as I can.

I think I rather creatively typed in 'summer inspo' and one of the first pins I came across had this here image...

...and all I wanted to do was grab my converse, hire a truck and go watch a movie under the stars. Thanks to the magic of the internet, a few days later I managed to do just that (sans truck), courtesy of Popup Screens.
I had a little rummage through Google to find all the outdoor cinemas popping up over London, came across Popup Screens and then saw that they were showing none other than 10 Things I Hate About You the very next night; THE EXCITEMENT.

So off we popped to buy a picnic blanket and a shed load of drinks and snacks (including Thornton's Toffee & White Chocolate Popcorn - holy mothurrrrr, that ish is insane), and made our way to North Greenwich (this screen was pitched on the little green area flanked by trees with an absolutely amazing view of the glowing dome and lit up cable cars - so so beautiful).

The film started at sunset (about 9.15pm) but we got there for about 8.30 so we could get ourselves all settled, make use of the bar and food stall (obvs) and just generally marvel at the cute-and-cosiness of it all. By the time the opening credits started rolling the crowd (all 400 of us) were very much hyped and ready to cheer, jeer, sing along to every song and recite every line we knew as it was said on screen. And it was literally the most fun I've had in a long time; we left the field with the end credits in the background, singing along to Cheap Trick, and extremely satisfied with what a great night we'd had. (Until we got back to the car park and saw how much the parking had cost us LOLOLOLOLOLOL)

And now some appreciation for the main event <3333

So, yeah, 10 Things I Hate About You is one of my all time FAVES; I took great joy in doing a whole Shakespeare project based on it for my English degree - the only time I've ever in the history of essay-writing actually enjoyed writing them.

And as it's a 90's American teen movie the soundtrack is obvs like, so awesome, and totally gets you feeling super pumped so be sure to check that out if you fancy a mood-lift!

Forgot to say about the price! DUH. Tickets were £10 each for adults which tbf is really quite good considering an indoor cinema ticket is almost that anyway; £10 for a classic film, unlimited leg room, a backdrop of pretty city lights and a team of people dedicated to making sure you have an all round lovely night. Oh and portaloos. Just in case you were dubious.

I most definitely encourage going to an outdoor cinema this summer, there are even a few free ones coming to London in the next few weeks!

What are your favourite movies, would love some recommendations! Will you be heading to an outdoor cinema this summer?
